My ethos is to deliver the best and safest evidence-based care tailored to you. This may be surgical or non-surgical. The main aim is to help you get on with your life as quickly and as well as possible.

It is an incredible privilege to be able to serve others by practising what I love. I was appointed as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in 2019 at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust where I specialise in Hand, Plastic and Microsurgery. I also work at the National Spinal Injuries Centre where I perform reconstructive surgery for complex pressure ulcers and tetraplegia upper limb to enable people with spinal cord injuries to gain better hand function.

As a surgeon, I completed specialist Plastic and Reconstructive surgical training in the Oxford Deanery. I was then awarded a Travelling Bursary by the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) as well as an Overseas Scholarship to undertake sub-specialist fellowship training in Reconstructive Microsurgery at the world-renowned Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. This comprehensive training has provided me with the skillset to deal with common as well as complex problems related to Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery. Prior to this, I completed a DPhil (PhD) as a Senior Scholar at Oxford University and my medical degree at Cambridge University.

I believe it is important to offer the best and safest, evidence-based treatments. My involvement in research allows me to do this. As a Clinical Lecturer at Oxford University, I continue to publish regularly in medical journals as well as surgical textbooks. I have also contributed to national guidance on traumatic limb reconstruction. Over the years, I have held research awards and grants from institutions including the Wellcome Trust, Academy of Medical Sciences, Royal College of Surgeons of England, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and BAPRAS.

I am constantly looking to improve the care we provide. And there is no better way than to train others. I serve as a GMC-recognised trainer and member of the Education and Training Committee of the British Society of Surgery for the Hand. I serve as peer-reviewer for medical journals, run a regular national Microsurgery training course, present at national and international conferences and host ‘Stoke Mandeville Plastics’, a popular webinar series for plastic surgeons worldwide, focusing on the cutting edge of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Outside surgery, I am blessed to have a wonderful family and enjoy playing the violin.

About Rebecca Shirley

Rebecca Shirley - Expert Surgery doctor

BSc, Diploma Hand Surgery, FRCS(Plast)

The favourite part of my job is the clinical care; I enjoy the challenge of diagnosis and find it rewarding and meaningful to solve problems that can improve, pain, function and quality of life.

I first became interested in plastic surgery when I cut my own hand as a medical student at University College London and I was operated on by a plastic surgeon. This led me to undertake a BSc and publish a paper on the ultrasound anatomy of the lip in The Lancet.

I am a Consultant at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and the National Spinal Injuries Centre. I value the importance of meeting peers around the world at conferences in order to discuss challenging cases and share experience. I continue to evolve my practice and am proud to host international events and webinars here in the UK.

I am also the clinical governance lead for my department in the NHS.

My training took place in Nottingham, Leicester, Chelmsford and East Grinstead, with fellowships at The Royal Marsden, Oxford University Hospitals, Tampere in Finland and Ganga Hospital in South India.

The care I offer is enhanced by my team based approach and the ability to discuss cases with trusted colleagues. My clinical interests are varied and I enjoy aspects of plastic surgery that are structural and functional.

I am on the British Society of Surgery of the Hand council, I am also on their education and training committee. I set up and run the microsurgery course with James and also run other novel training events. I completed the Lady Estelle Wolfson Emerging Leaders Fellowship in 2019 and believe in using all the knowledge I have to educate patients and inspire the next generation of surgeons.

About Jeremy N Rodrigues

Jeremy Rodrigues - Expert Surgery doctor

BSc, MSc, MBA, PhD, FRCS(Plast)

My passion lies in finding tailored solutions for you, informed by both my professional experience and my understanding of the best scientific evidence.

I work as a substantive NHS consultant plastic surgeon in Buckinghamshire, treating skin conditions such as hidradenitis suppurativa and skin cancer across the face and body, and hand conditions. I am also an Associate Professor, and my research programme focusses on improving how we measure outcomes of treatment in terms of quality of life, facial appearance and hand function. My clinical work and research combine closely.

As a student, I became interested in plastic surgery as it involved making bespoke plans to fit people’s needs, and because attention to fine details made a difference.

I undertook clinical training in Edinburgh, Nottingham, Bradford, Sheffield, Stoke Mandeville, Oxford and Chelsea & Westminster in the UK, and also at The Mayo Clinic (USA) and Ganga Hospital (India). I combine the best elements from each of these units in my practice today.

As a clinical academic, I keep abreast of the latest developments in the field, and can understand how and when they may provide real-world impact for you.
